DBA breaks new ground at PentaCon

by John Lawitzke

At PentaCon, I ran two DBA events. This was a new convention for me to run at. The convention was well run and featured all genres of gaming. From looking at last year's event listing I saw some historical games, but not a whole lot. So, in an attempt to make the trip to the convention more appealing, I ran two different DBA events on Saturday afternoon and evening. As I did at Drums, I made the first event an early period (Book I & II) event and the second event a later period (Book III & IV) event.

Given the mix of gaming at the convention, I wasn't planning on having a huge turn out for DBA. However, I when there knowing that I'd be happy if I at least had enough players to run my events. PentaCon is a three day convention and was a weekend gaming outing for my wife and me. My wife, Lisa, took a break from her roleplaying activities to learn DBA and play in the early period event. She has earned the bragging rights of beating Steve Smith in her first DBA event.

I ended up with eight players for the early period event and four players for the late period event. We had one new DBA player in each of the events. These events were the usual GLADBAG good times. Mike Demana even showed up in spirit when he sent a college football trash talk text messages to Steve Smith during his final game against Greg Crane. Steve and I then sent a few texts back to Mike.

I had a lot of fun at PentaCon and am looking forward to going there again next year. I would like to give a special thanks to Greg Crane and Steve Smith who drove over to the convention for the day specifically to support my promotion of DBA at PentaCon. I'd also like to thank David Shepps for driving down from Ann Arbor, just to play one event and then drive home!
