First-ever GLADBAG Invitational scores a success

A score of players showed up for the first-ever GLADBAG Invitational at Origins 2008. Whether they were lured by the prospect of competition, or by the fabulous painted army prize provided by our sponsor, Splintered Light Miniatures, or simply to play DBA and have fun, 20 gamers from various parts of the U.S. showed up to play. Regions represented include the Pacific Southwest, with Rob Runnels and Dan Henderson, the South with Marty Schmidt, and Midwest with Mark Schultz, as well as lots of players from our Great Lakes core area of Ohio, Indiana and Michigan.

After four rounds of play, only two undefeateds remained: Rob Runnels and local player extraordinaire, Tom Graves. The two fought a grueling battle before Rob came back from being down 2-0 to win. Rob had no cake walk to his victory, having defeated tournament winners Mike Stelzer, John Loy and Allen Sams prior to facing Tom. So, congrats to Rob for being the first winner of the Great Lakes Area DBA Gamers Invitational Tournament!

The tournament was run as a standard "Open" format, with initial pairings by army year, and subsequent matchups featuring closest to army year as possible, with winners facing winners, and so on. I did add one last minute "non qualifyer" to make it an even 20 players. This prevented me from having to play myself, which made running the tournament that much easier.

Final standings are listed below:
