New format packs in the players on Thursday!

Roy Hayes awesome, handpainted shields on his Greeks
wowed the players
The response to the first ever running of a 15mm Matched Pairs tournament
at Origins was incredible. We had 20 players, some coming from as far away
as Colorado and Texas, to try it out. The players each brought two armies,
historical opponents, and used them in two of the rounds, while using opponents'
armies in the other two. I'd played this format at Siege of Augusta a couple
times and was eager to stage it here. Players are encouraged to bring a
balanced matchup, as the opponent gets first choice of which army of the
pair he will use.
The players drew numbered poker chips which randomly placed them on their
initial battle board. Thereafter, one side would rotate down the row of
tables one space, playing a new opponent in each round. Since those on the
same side of the table never play against each other, there would be two
tourney winners. A bit of humor ensued in the final rounds when my alternating
table side shifting became confused. My initial thought was the side of
the table whose armies had just been used to stay in place (packing up),
while the opponents shifted down one spot. This led to confusion (mostly
mine!) on whose turn it was to shift. Next year, one side of the table will
do all the shifting, while the other camps out for four rounds...!
This format provided the most balanced results I have ever seen in a
DBA tournament in my decade plus of playing. Amongst 20 players and four
rounds, we had NO undefeateds. We had only four 3-1 players, with an incredible
13 players going 2-2 -- winning 50% of their games. Only 3 players had a
losing record! Now, THAT is a "matched" format. We will definitely
be holding the Matched Pairs as a regular part of our Origins slat e of
DBA.
