DBA Open goes with new scoring system this year

by John Lawitzke

We had an excellent turn out for again the annual Saturday morning DBA Open event at Advance the Colors. This year, we 28 players for this four round event. This allowed me to run two brackets of 14 players each. This turned out to be a good number of players for a four round event.

Unfortunately, my co-GM, John Loy, was unable to make it to ATC, this year. So, I was a solo GM. However, I'll let you in on a secret: Although this is the largest DBA event which I run each year, it is actually the easiest. Other than teaching DBA School and making match-ups for each round, the event almost runs itself since there are so many highly experienced players in attendance.

Although John Loy could not be there in person, he was there in spirit via his contributions to the prize pool. Between the two of us, we assembled enough prizes to give something to the top four places in each bracket. Of my events, I also believe that this is the hardest one to win. The time limits for my other games permit me to run only three rounds. For the ATC, we have a tradition of being a 4 round event. In my opinion, it is much harder to win in a 4 round event than a 3 round event.

I tried something a little different this year with scoring. In the past, I have used my own scoring system, in which results were based on win-loss ratio, then opponent's elements killed, and then down to your own losses. This year, I used the full NASAMW scoring system as described on the Fanaticus website. It features positive points for winning and killing, and negative points for being killed. The system worked fairly well. The only part which was a bit fiddly was doing the count back to resolve ties. I had to do this to resolve three ties in total score. The count back resolved two of the ties. For the third, I had to apply "umpire discretion." In that case, both players were 2-2, killed 12 stands, and had 10 stands of their own killed. However, one of the players had killed the opponent's general. So, I used that for the tie breaker. It helped that I had printed up formal score sheets to track everything on. I will be continuing to use this system in the future.

Thanks to everyone who came out to play in this event this year.
